About Gluten-Free Singapore Support Group

Gluten-Free Singapore started with a simple problem: there wasn't enough reliable, local guidance for eating safely here.

Founder Karen Horan moved from the United States to Singapore in 2011, already years into gluten-free living after her daughter and husband were diagnosed with celiac disease back in 2006. She quickly found that awareness around gluten-free eating in Singapore was far lower than what she'd known back home, and that strategies which worked in other countries often didn't translate. So she started figuring it out herself, restaurant by restaurant, ingredient by ingredient, and founded the Singapore Celiac and Gluten Intolerance Support Group. That early effort grew into what is now Gluten-Free Singapore.

Today, GFSG is a membership library and community built for three kinds of people: the traveler arriving in Singapore for the first time, the newly diagnosed person trying to make sense of it all, and the resident settling in for the long term. We offer structured courses on gluten basics, local ingredients, and local dishes, two active community groups for real-time support, and a Travel Guide that has already helped over 1,000 travelers eat with confidence in Singapore.

Membership also funds something bigger than access to the library. Part of our mission is training Singapore's restaurants and F&B staff to safely serve gluten-free diners, so that eating out here gets a little easier for everyone, member or not.

We exist because nobody should have to spend fifteen years figuring this out the hard way, the way Karen did. We'd rather you start with what we've already learned.

About Karen Horan

Karen has been living gluten-free since 2006, when her daughter and husband were diagnosed with celiac disease.

After relocating from the U.S. to Singapore in 2011, she founded the Singapore Celiac and Gluten Intolerance Support Group and launched Gluten-Free Singapore to help others navigate life here safely. Fifteen years in, she's still doing the same work: building awareness, sharing what actually works, and helping people eat well without the years of trial and error she went through.

With a background in education, Karen brings a teacher's instinct for breaking complicated things down into something usable, which shows up throughout the GFSG courses and community.
